BMW E24: Underrated Beauty

It must’ve been 1981 or 1982 when I first saw the BMW E24 6-Series in person. It was low, sleek and champagne in color. The moniker on the rear deck-lid read 635CSi which to me, meant nothing at the time. All I knew was that it was one of the most beautiful cars I’d ever seen.

Built from 1976-1989 the BMW E24s are not only considered to be one of the most beautiful shapes ever to come out of Bavaria, but also one of the most underrated cars the company has ever produced. Powered by an inline-6 cylinder engine, power ratings ranged from 181 hp in 1978, all the way up to 282 hp for the M6s built from 1983-1989. 2010 BMW M6 Convertible

We’ve always known Vilner to be an off-key tuner that specializes in dressing up interiors. Apparently, it’s also a fan of Star Wars, which may or not be surprising depending on your allegiance to the movie franchise. The Bulgarian tuner is such a fan that it decided to get an early start on Episode 7 promotions by giving the BMW M6 Convertible a Stormtrooper treatment.

Before Star Wars junkies get too excited, the program is actually a one-off, build specifically for one customer who offered his last-generation M6 to receive the aftermarket program. In other words, it’s a unique project that will be sold on a limited number.

No more than 10 cars, according to Vilner. The BMW Stormtrooper is actually the second project Vilner has made of this dramatic scale. Remember last year, when the company introduced the Bullshark ? Seems like a long time ago, right?

2015 BMW i8

The last time BMW built a dedicated sports car positioned above the Z4 (and before that, the Z3), it built the Z8. With power from the E39 M5’s V8 and styling heavily inspired by the classic 507 of the 1950s, the limited production Z8 was – and is, if the way they’ve held their value is any indication – highly coveted. Of course, that’s the whole idea behind a “halo car.”

 However, the world has changed since production of the Z8 (and the automatic-transmission-equipped Alpina V8 Roadster that was based on it) ended about a decade ago. Retro styling and throaty naturally-aspirated engines are out; forward-looking design and smaller forced-induction engines and/or hybrid drive are in. So BMW, never one to like appearing to be behind the times, has incorporated all of those en vogue features in its new technological (if not performance and price) flagship, the 2015 i8.
