BMW Vision ConnectedDrive

BMW will still hit very hard in the next Motor Show in Geneva, which starts in a few days. After the Vision concept cars, performance-oriented via the engine, and Gina showed that the slopes of materials research, here’s Connected Drive.

The new BMW concept offers all tracks followed by BMW in terms of communication board. The effect Connected Drive offers a projection of 3D key information on the windshield to the manufacturer, a multimedia touch screen with the passenger infotainment functions all normal. BMW also introduces a system of microguidage specific parking spaces, as well as various functions that adapt the car to its environment, including changing interior lighting.

More surprisingly, a multitude of sensors positioned substantially in the front grille are used to inaugurate the latest collision avoidance systems and other regulators speeds assets. Gadgets that we are not keen to Blog4auto because they make the driver too dependent. Finally, the BMW attracted especially by its genre: a 2-seater roadster sports, compact, and truly spectacular, reminiscent of a BMW is the technology, but also and especially the emotion, passion and a real culture.

It must be recognized that the brand has found a true path for its design, and the latest models are clearly successful benefit. A true see in Geneva to dream a little…arturopro.com

Based on the 1986 model year E30 3-Series, the first M3 was introduced with a 2.3 L I4 S14B23 engine (also known as S14). The engine design was based on various BMW parts: basic block layout from the M10 4-cylinder (found in the 2002 and 320 series) overbored and reinforced to similar specifications of the BMW M88 inline-6.

The valve train and head architecture from BMW's M1 and, later, M6 inline-6-cylinder was adopted for aggressive breathing. In contrast to later M3 iterations, the E30 M3 was campaigned by BMW as well as other racing teams including Prodrive and AC Schnitzer competing in many forms of racing including rally as well as German, British, Italian, Belgian, French, and Australian touring.

The production of the E30 road car was to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring Car racing. It was to compete with the "2.3-16V"-model of the Mercedes-Benz W201 190E that was introduced in 1983. In its final years of competition, the 2.5-litre S14 engine in full race trim was capable of over 250 hp (190 kW) naturally aspirated.

The E30 M3 road car The third car road-going version produced 192 bhp (143 kW; 195 PS) (catalyzed model) and 197.3 bhp (147 kW; 200 PS) (non-catalyzed model). Evolution models (not sold in North America) continued with 2.3 litres but adopted a number of changes including a revised intake camshaft profile and modified exhaust camshaft timing, increased compression, and a more efficient cylinder head intake port design. Larger diameter exhaust header tubes along with the lack of a catalyst contributed to produce approximately 220 hp (160 kW).

Fastest cars in the world - BMW M3

BMW M3

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3-Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M. M3 models have been derived from the E30, E36, E46 and E90/E92/E93 3-series, and sold with coupé, saloon and convertible body styles.

Upgrades over the "standard" 3-Series automobiles include more powerful and responsive engines, improved handling/suspension/braking systems, aerodynamic body enhancements, and interior/exterior accents with the tri-colour "M" (Motorsport) emblem. Over the years the M3 and M5 have become the benchmark vehicle against which most sport sedans in its class are compared despite competition from Mercedes-AMG and Audi quattro GmbH (Audi RS).

BMW has gone back and forth on the name several times since our Georg Kacher reported more than three years ago that the 3 Series coupe would be replaced with the 4 Series. How could BMW give up on the M3 name? M4 sounds too much like a British motorway.

There’s precedent, though, in the form of the 6 Series coupes slotted between the 5 and 7 Series with which it shares components, and the 8 Series, the Bavarian Mercedes SL. Then there is Audi, which delineates the A4 coupe from the sedan by calling it the A5. Never underestimate any German automaker’s preponderance for mimicking a competitor. Finally, there’s the matter of an upcoming 4 Series Gran Coupe in the form of a smaller version of the 6 Series Gran Coupe.

With the outgoing 3 coupe, BMW already had emphasized the two-door’s more spectacular proportions by making it longer and lower than its corresponding sedan. BMW’s press kit breathlessly describes the length, the low silhouette and the width of the new 4 Series. Suddenly, it’s 1957 all over again.

The 4 makes its debut at the North American International Auto Show – that’s Detroit, in January. Its wheelbase is 110.6 inches, or two inches longer than the suddenly stubby-looking 3 Series coupe. BMW has added 1.8 inches to the front track, for 60.8 inches, and 3.1 inches to the rear, for 62.7. It’s 71.9 inches wide overall, 1.7 inches more than the 3 Coupe, and 0.6 inches lower, at 53.6. Overall length is 182.7 inches, still compact next to many other sport coupes out there (we’re looking at you, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger). BMW’s self-description of the 4 Series reads like a Biblical chapter describing the second coming of the 2002, though with that car’s Teutonic flavor replaced with tasteful dollops of satin finish chrome, and with leather from the world’s most supple cows.

“The BMW Coupe is surrounded by a halo of fascination,” it begins, and it might as well end there, though it doesn’t. The “classy” (BMW’s word) satin finish chrome highlights such functional details as the air intakes and vents, door handles and sideview mirrors, proving that in a global, international economy, the right car company can turn what would be gauche on Detroit iron into glamour. Bayerische Motor Werken’s latest take on the iconic twin-kidney grille adds an optic fiber line off the hexagonal full-LED headlamps, to form a visual link between the inner, high-beam headlamp and the kidney.

It will be a striking vision with just the parking lights on, a crafty update on the BMW halo lamps that so many others have mimicked. There’s a large intake at the lower fascia, which its maker insists hints at the “extra air required by the powerful engines,” which will certainly include the turbo fours, a new inline six for the, gulp, M4 and very likely a diesel four even for the North American market. It has very pronounced front and rear wheel arches, the latter marking the widest point on the car, under which are 20-inch wheels. Two flanking vents on either side of the front fascia’s lower maw differ in thickness and are specifically for brake venting or oil cooling, and for the Air Curtain, which is the EfficientDynamics engineering feat that channels air around the outside of the front wheels, for better airflow and reduced fuel consumption.
Read, “trick aero.” See what you can do when you’re not blowing half your engineering budget on Formula 1 engines? The 4’s profile borrows the 3’s double-swage line, and of course, features BMW’s latest iteration of the Hoffmeister kink, just appearing there in all its glory to emphasize that long, low roofline. That large, satin chrome C-shaped accent behind the front wheels you’ve been wondering about (“does it do something, or is it just a fake air scoop?”) is called the Air Breather.

It works with the Air Curtain at the edges of the lower front fascia (remember? From a few paragraphs above?) for drag reduction around the front wheels. And you don’t need to be one second behind the first-place car, in the DRS zone, for it to work. In back, L-shaped taillamps taper toward the center and will look familiar to devotees of all BMW’s latest models. The rear bumper features another piece of satin-finish trim, in aluminum.

Then there’s the interior. What would a new BMW be without an interior? Except that this is no black-on-black Bauhaus interior hearkening back to the Bavarians’ glory days of the early ‘70s. Here’s all you need to know about the new 4 Series’ interior: the cupholders are covered in leather. Yep. This, from a German automaker that as recently as the Gerhard Schroeder administration was loath to give American consumers cupholders of any substance at all. Please avoid using the leather cupholders for bottles of milk. That’s just too perverse. It’s certainly not kosher.

The show car is painted Liquid Metal Silver, and the interior is two-tone black and Schiaparelli Brown, consisting, BMW says, of “sustainably tanned leather.” Hand-braided leather trim elements run vertically down the seats. It’s all very appealing, a very modern sort of opulence, though it’s not the sort of thing that will make the average middle-class enthusiast think, “hey, this is a Bimmer I might actually afford.” We’ll have to wait to see how opulent more quotidian version look when the 4 Series goes on sale in 2013, some time after its official unveiling at the Detroit show January 14.

All-Electric BMW Active E

The ActiveE is BMW’s all-new electric vehicle, designed as a ‘beta’ version of the forthcoming i3. Based on the swell little 1 Series Coupe, the Active E uses similar drive train and battery technologies as the i3, but in a less future-luxe package.
BMW says the Active E represents the second part of their three-phase electric vehicle development plan, which will culminate in the series production of the BMW i3 electric vehicle sometime in 2013.

What's New?

BMW took what they learned from the MINI E and created, for the first time, what feels like a fully realized electric car. BMW developed everything in the car - the energy storage module, its wiring, the electric motor, the power electronics and the transmission. The power plant - a 170-horsepower, 184 pound-feet-of-torque, 125-kW electric motor - is shoehorned into the engine bay and is powered by a 32-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. While BMW designed the battery pack too, the cells are made by SB LiMotive, a partnership between Samsung and Bosch.
Because lithium-ion batteries are so temperature-sensitive, BMW developed a new management system with a ‘Smart Function’ that warms the battery pack remotely, resulting in less loss. Also new on the Active E is a ‘Gliding” mode, which makes for a less obtrusive drive. That said, it takes some time to learn to drive an electric car. Whereas in a gas-powered car, you slow down by using the brakes, in the Active E, you can slow down using the accelerator pedal, via brake energy regeneration. To wit: when you lift off the accelerator, the electric motor becomes, as BMW says ‘a generator that feeds the electricity gained from kinetic energy back into the vehicle battery,” resulting in torque braking. BMW says you can spend 75 percent of city driving never using the brake pedal. On our 20-mile loop in the car that proved true.

What’s Good

Unlike the much-maligned drive on the MINI E, the drive on the Active E is pretty damn good, electric vehicle or not. The regenerative braking is a lot less active than on the MINI E, which was close to the point of being obtrusive. While BMW told us the MINI E customers liked the regenerative braking, the engineers went back and did a major re-think, resulting in the new gliding mode. BMW calls this ‘a distinctive intermediate position of the accelerator pedal’ which allows the vehicle to glide without using any energy.

What’s Bad

It’s somewhat hard to fault the short range of an electric car, but, while we really enjoyed the Active E, it would be hard to present it as an option for a one-car household. With a range of 100 miles or so, we’d still live in fear of running out of juice at an inopportune time or if your short commute turns into a long one due to traffic.
Also, you’ll need to rethink the way you drive. Due to the aforementioned regenerative braking and glide mode, you’ll need to learn to drive with just your left foot -- and think of the ‘gas’ pedal as both an accelerator and a brake. Whoa!

The Price

The ActiveE is available with a 24-month lease in limited markets - Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, New York, Boston and Hartford. For $499 per month, with $2,250 down, you too can drive off in one of the 700 electric BMWs allocated for the US. Which is about the same price you’ll pay for a well-equipped gas-powered 1 Series. Don’t forget, you’ll also need to pay for an in-home electric charging station, which runs about 2500 dollars.

The Verdict

BMW presents a pretty compelling proposition here. But while we admire and respect what BMW has accomplished with the Active E and feel they’ll have no problem leasing all 700 that are coming to the states, the Active E is starting to make us pine for the third stage of the BMW group electrification, the iBrand vehicles. That said, if you want an electric car now that ups the style factor from the Nissan Leaf, the Active E is the car for you.

G-Power G1 V8 Hurricane

Since the 1 Series M already has buffer bodywork than its less athletic siblings, G-Power didn’t bother to change much on the outside. The stock hood is replaced by a power dome carbon fiber unit, and the stock decklid is ditched in favor of a carbon fiber piece featuring an integral ducktail spoiler.

All the other panels are refinished in a grayish brown that’s bound to win nods of approval from the Brown Car Appreciation Society, the ride is lowered thanks to one of G-Power’s GM1-RS Clubsport coilover kit, carbon-ceramic brake rotors are installed, and a set of 20″ wheels from G-Power’s Silverstone Diamond line are bolted onto each corner. Inside, the cockpit is draped in white and brown leather an Alcantara. And unlike most tuning shops that do upholstery work, G-Power takes the time to re-contour the seat cushions to provide the optimum mix of comfort and support. Your posterior will thank you.

But when it comes to entertaining your posterior (and the rest of you), nothing does a better job than the changes made under the hood. But rather than pumping up the 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six, G-Power yanks it out (along with the 6-speed manual transmission) and drops in the M3′s 4.0L V8 and M-DCT 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. That alone would increase output from 335hp to 414hp, but G-Power didn’t stop there. It also added a hand fabricated stainless steel exhaust system and, in typical G-Power fashion, a centrifugal supercharger. The final tallies come out to 592hp and 428 lb.-ft of torque. All that power packed into a 1 Series body? Dang. And if you think the power and torque figures are nuts, check out the performance figures. G-Power claims 0-62 mph sprints will take 4.4 seconds, while top speed is 205 mph. Wowza. But the G1 V8 Hurricane RS is likely to sell out just as quickly as it moves: G-Power will perform only 30 conversions, a number that is significant because 30 is the number of years in business the firm will be celebrating next year. Oh, and the conversion will cost about $182,000 with value-added tax and other fees. Yeah, there are cheaper ways to celebrate a 30th anniversary or birthday, but a tattoo won’t propel you to 205 mph, will it?
