BMW 6-series Gran Coupe

The 2012 BMW 6-Series is a significant improvement on the previous model, in aesthetics, performance, and features. Today, a new model joins the 6-Series lineup: the Gran Coupe.

It probably happens all the time. A BMW shopper stands frozen with indecision in the middle of a showroom. To his left sits the 5-series sedan. On his right, the 6-series coupe. The two share a platform and several powertrains, the 6 having more attractive sheetmetal, and the 5er being the practical choice. If only there were a product that took the average of these two, a sort of 5.5-series. Enter the 6-series Gran Coupe.


 

5.5-series, Plus One
Previewed first by the Concept CS and more recently by the Concept Gran Coupe, this addition to the 6-series lineup swells a market sliver first split off by Mercedes’ CLS-class. Where the Gran Coupe differs from the CLS and the newcomer Audi A7 is in the rear seat: BMW calls its offering a 4+1, as the back row includes a third seat. It’s actually more of an armrest with a seatbelt; the center floor console continues all the way up to the bottom cushion’s edge. That ought to set the BMW apart in a now-crowded segment of stylish sedans. (It will certainly set middle passengers' legs apart, but we digress.)


The Gran Coupe rides on the 5-series’ 116.9-inch wheelbase (4.5 longer than the two-door 6’s), but is about four inches longer than a 5 sedan or 6 coupe and shares its width with its 6-series counterparts. It is nearly identical to the two-doors from the A-pillar forward, and its interior mimics those of the coupe and convertible, albeit with the different seating arrangement and more rear legroom. Per the usual style-over-practicality trade-off, expect less headroom back there than in the more traditional four-door 5-series.

Three Powertrains, Some Waiting

The Gran Coupe will launch in the summer of 2012 with the 640i; the 650i and 650i xDrive will arrive some weeks later. The 640i uses the same single-turbo inline-six from the similarly named coupe and convertible, with output measuring 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The rear- and all-wheel-drive 650i will use an updated version of the N63 twin-turbo V-8 dubbed N63Tü. Using a new Valvetronic-equipped head, it makes 45 hp and 30 lb-ft more than the current 4.4-liter, for totals of 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. (You can expect the N63Tü to spread to the rest of BMW’s 50i offerings, but BMW won’t tell us which ones will be first in line.) For those keeping score, that’s 43 hp and 37 lb-ft more than the Mercedes CLS550 and its twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8.

Regardless of engine choice, the Gran Coupe is equipped with BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission and an engine stop/start system. Steering-wheel paddle shifters are standard as well.

Features and options will largely mirror those of the 6-series, including standard Dynamic Damper Control, optional Roll Stabilization and Active Steering, and a laundry list of included and extra-cost nanny systems. Adaptive LED headlights will also be available. To the Driving Dynamics Control system’s Comfort and Sport settings, the Gran Coupe adds Eco+, which further reduces throttle sensitivity, shoots for earlier upshifts, and helps coach the driver to use less fuel by providing “tips and incentives.” An M Sport package will be available for order right away—the highlights are a sport exhaust on 650i models, unique 19-inch wheels (20s are a further upgrade), special paint options, and resculpted front and rear fascias.

BMW’s four-door car with a coupe-like roofline will make its auto-show debut at next year’s Geneva gathering. In the meantime, the company no doubt will be hard at work finding more niches to enter. A smaller, 3-series-based coupe/sedan is surely on someone’s mind.

BMW R 1200C

 
BMW R1200C is a cruiser motorcycle manufactured by BMW Motorrad. From 1997 to 2004, BMW manufactured 40,218 units, including a smaller engine version, the R850C, which was produced from from 1997 to 2000.

At the time of its introduction, the cruiser configuration represented more than half the US motorcycle market.

The R1200C was BMW's attempt to tap into this market, and was a significant departure from their previous endeavors. The R1200C was designed by BMW head designer David Robb, featuring a cruiser riding posture. From its inception, the R1200C featured a passenger seat that could fold up to become a driver backrest with three different angles, adjustable while riding.

When BMW ended production of the R1200C lineup, Dr. Herbert Diess, then President BMW Motorrad, cited a prime reason for discontinuing the bike as the apparent unsuitability of the 1,170 cc (71 cu in), 61 hp (45 kW) engine to then current market tastes and the unavailability of a suitable engine for further development, but did not rule out BMW pursuing a reinterpretation of the cruiser idea at a later date. The final model of the R1200C to be produced was the commemorative Montauk model, of which 350 units were built.

What can you say about BMW's first serious attempt at a cruiser? Firstly you have to hand it to there L.A design studio and the cool dudes who came up with the radical styling and secondly you have to congratulate the German engineers for transforming art work sketches into a real living breathing and going motorcycle.

Powered by the largest Boxer engine ever, the 1170 cc, 61 bhp chrome machine, will embarrass many sportsters out there. The first thing that hits you is the sheer amount of aluminium and steel, and the way it's been used. The front Telelever is a piece of sublime design, giving both brilliant aesthetics, surefooted (if a touch light) handling combined with outstanding braking and no dive. I have had, over the years, admirers look, stair and even crane at the machinery that I been lucky enough to test, but nothing has ever provoked the awe in which this bike was received by the public in and around London. I suppose for this we must thank another great BMW division, yes you know the one, the marketing boys and there lavish advertising, not to forget Mr Bond I presume, who cannot have done the street cred too much harm. No when the Beemer Boys (owe and it was so nearly the Bentley boys too) decide make an entrance you had better be on the Mars probe if you want to avoid it.

Why then after all this thought and brilliance does the actual riding experience leave me somewhat underawed? A little like the climax of a movie when the bad guy doesn't GET IT! Yes, the bike is quick, very responsive and quite comfortable, particularly with the back rest up. But at the same time the exhaust note is so feable, that upon hearing it, one of my friends likened it to a locust with a cork stuck up its bum (how he knew what that sounded like I never did find out), but I think that you get the message. As for cruising, HA! I have never riden a bike less comfortable on the open highway. Unlike with most cruisers where the rider sits low and protected by the front body work, on the beemer you sit high and are very unprotected by the small light and even smaller instrument binnacle. Talking of which, I don't know who designed the indicator switches and what size fingers they have, but my medium sized gloved hands had serious problems both activating and deactivating the fiddly buttons. Oh, and guys (n' gals) if you're going to make chrome etc the name of the game, don't go and make the starter a naff grey plastic button.

To BMW's credit, I hear that a sports exhaust is coming and a small screen is already available. Apart from that, what you see is what you get. A cool looking, bad sounding cruiser that will impress your friends no end and no doubt run for ever. That's if the horizontally opposed twin doesn't rock you out of your seat at the traffic lights and the circulation through your hands doesn't pack in after a long journey courtesy of the vibration. But all in all- it's a true Guggenheim mobile with need for a touch more substance.

'In 1987 the company decided there should be something special for the real petrolheads. The M6, with a 24-valve head on a 3.5-litre set of pots, outputted a hefty-for-the time 256bhp. A special sport suspension, and a close-ratio 5-speed manual gearbox, were included along with a limited-slip diff and larger wheels'

BMW 507



The BMW 507 is a roadster produced by BMW from 1956 to 1959. Initially intended to be exported to the United States at a rate of thousands per year, it ended up being too expensive, resulting in a total production figure of 252 cars and heavy losses for BMW.

The BMW 507 was conceived by US automobile importer Max Hoffman who, in 1954, persuaded the BMW management to produce a roadster version of the BMW 501 and BMW 502 saloons to fill the gap between the expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL and the cheap and underpowered Triumph and MG sports cars. Existing designs by Ernst Loof were rejected by Hoffman, who found them to be unappealing. In November 1954, at Hoffman's insistence, BMW contracted designer Albrecht von Goertz to design the BMW 503 and the 507.BMW engineer Fritz Fiedler was assigned to design the mechanical package, using existing components wherever possible.



The 507 shared the frame of the 503, shortened from 2,835 millimetres (111.6 in) to 2,480 millimetres (98 in).Overall length was 4,835 millimetres (190.4 in), and overall height was 1,257 millimetres (49.5 in). Curb weight was about 1,330 kilograms (2,900 lb).[14] The body was almost entirely hand-formed of aluminium, and no two models were exactly the same. Many cars were sold with an optional hand-fabricated removable hardtop. Because of the car-to-car differences, each hardtop fits only the car for which it was made.


Front suspension was parallel double wishbones, with torsion bar springs and an anti-roll bar. Rear suspension had a live axle, also sprung by torsion bars, and located by a Panhard rod and a central, transverse A-arm to control acceleration and braking forces. Brakes were Alfin drum brakes of 284.5 mm (11.2 in) diameter, and power brakes were optional. Late-model 507s had front Girling disc brakes.

The engine was the aluminium alloy BMW OHV V8, of 3,168 cubic centimetres (193.3 cu in) displacement, with pushrod-operated overhead valves. It had two Solex Zenith 32NDIX two-barrel carburetors, a chain-driven oil pump, and a compression ratio of 7.8:1, yielding 150 horsepower (110 kW) DIN at 5,000 rpm. It was mated to a close ratio four-speed manual transmission.[3] The standard rear-end ratio was 3.70:1, but ratios of 3.42:1 and 3.90:1 were optional.A contemporary road test of a 507 with the standard 3.70:1 final drive was reported in Motor Revue, stating a 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 11.1 seconds and a top speed of 122 mph.
