bmw 650i 2014

Grand touring coupes are all about dispatching journeys in comfort and dazzling onlookers upon arrival. Thanks to an opulent cabin, voluptuous sheetmetal and a pair of effortlessly powerful engine options, BMW's 6-Series is able to achieve both goals in memorable fashion. In addition to the stylish coupe detailed in this page, the 6-Series is also available in convertible and four-door Gran Coupe forms.

The BMW 327

Recent Changes BMW recently upgraded the 650i's V8 from 400 to 445 horsepower and discontinued the available six-speed manual transmission. A new M Sport Edition package offers a number of luxury and appearance features at a discount.

Overview Though the 6-Series shares a platform with BMW's unassuming 5-Series sedan, you'd be hard pressed to tell that by looking at its shapely exterior. Well-balanced proportions and graceful surface detailing give the coupe an understated yet subtly muscular look that will likely still look fresh 20 years down the line. Simplicity of design and opulence of material quality are the defining characteristics of the interior. A minimalistic instrument panel serves up all of the vital information the driver needs - nothing more, nothing less - while BMW's iDrive infotainment system keeps the number of secondary controls down to a manageable level. This straightforwardness contributes greatly to ease of use and also focuses attention on the supple leather upholstery, delicate French stitching and impressive wood or aluminum trim that adorn the cabin. Space is abundant for front-seat occupants, but a paucity of legroom and headroom mean the rear seats are best left to children. Entertainment, navigation and Bluetooth functions are displayed on a 10.2-inch high-definition display and controlled by iDrive, which was much-maligned when first introduced but has since evolved into one of the more user-friendly infotainment systems on the market. iDrive also provides access to ConnectedDrive, which enables passengers to get directions with real-time traffic information, surf the internet on the go, utilize concierge services and more. A variety of high-tech driver and safety systems are optional: Surround View parking camera system, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, a Lane Departure Warning System and Active Blind Spot Detection along with the BMW Head-Up-Display. The latest incarnation of this system projects vital information onto the windshield in full color. For audiophiles, the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System provides what BMW describes as "a feast of aural pleasure seldom experienced inside a car." Let's Talk Performance The 6-Series is offered as the six-cylinder 640i or the eight-cylinder 650i. The 640i features BMW's smooth single-turbo "N55″ 3.0-liter inline-six, which makes 315 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. Though slightly slower than the 650i, the 640i's smaller engines equates to a lighter overall weight and slightly more nimble handling as well as an impressive fuel economy: the EPA rates the car at 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The 650i packs BMW's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 under the hood, which was upgraded for the latest model year with BMW's Valvetronic variable valve timing and lift system. This change helps the mill to crank out 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque (upgrades of 45 ponies and 30 lb-ft). Zero-to-60 mph can be achieved in under five seconds, though fuel economy drops to 15/23 mpg. Both models shift through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Available exclusively on the 650i is BMW's "xDrive" all-wheel-drive system, which adds a couple hundred pounds of agility-sapping weight but allows the big coupe to motor its way through all but the worst inclement weather. Although the 6-Series is a large and heavy coupe, careful chassis tuning means that it drives like a much smaller, lighter vehicle. An optional Adaptive Drive system ratchets up the sportyness factor by using electronically adjustable dampers and stabilizers to minimize body roll. Also optional is Integral Active Steering, which adds rear-wheel steering to the mix in order to increase low-speed agility and high-speed stability.

Standard and Optional Features The 6-Series comes standard with leather upholstery, a navigation system with a 10.2-inch display, voice command functionality and 20 GB of storage space, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, dynamic cruise control, a rear-view camera, a nine-speaker, 205-watt AM/FM/CD stereo system with HD radio and a USB input, a sunroof, a proximity key, xenon headlights, LED foglights and 18-inch alloy wheels. Highlights from the lengthy options list include the M Sport Package, which includes an aggressive body kit, shadowline exterior trim, an M steering wheel, alcantara headliner and 19-inch alloy wheels; the Executive Package, which brings ventilated multi-contour front seats, a head-up display, a premium sound system and concierge services; and the Lighting Package, which adds full LED lights and automatic high beams. A newly available M Sport Edition package builds on the normal M Sport package by adding extra features at no extra cost. It decks out the interior with a Nappa leather dashboard and a head-up display.

Opt for the 650i and BMW will throw in a handful of extra safety and driver assistance systems, including Active Driving Assistance, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Side and Top View Cameras and Speed Limit Info. Outside, M Sport Edition models receive adaptive LED headlights and an available Sakhir Orange metallic paintwork, which was previously available only on hard-core M models like the M6 and M5.

Occupant Safety All 6-Series coupe models are fitted with dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems, electronic brakeforce distribution and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Key Competitors Competition for the 6-Series ranges the gamut from larger luxury coupes like the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and sportier machines like the Porsche 911 Carrera to the Jaguar XK, which splits the difference between the extremes. leftlanenews.com

Gran Lusso Coupe

The first collaboration between BMW and Pininfarina is this blunt-force two-door called the BMW Pininfarini Gran Lusso Coupe revealed at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. Said to be the "interpretation of a luxurious BMW Coupé as seen through the eyes of Pininfarina," once you get past all of the design-speak, you can focus on the full-bodied and keen-edged missile sitting on 21-inch wheels.

The long wheelbase makes for short overhangs. Up front, BMW's design language gets scraped across a whetstone, everything getting sharper, including the usually round cat's eye headlights that have gone dihedral. Under the hood is a V12, behind the twin-kidney grille in matte-sheen aluminium and high-gloss black. The same aluminum treatment also backs the taillights, the lenses designed to let air flow through them.

Inside is room for four, a cockpit canted toward the driver, Foglizzo leather in black and Tobacco Brown, 48,000-year-old kauri wood from New Zealand, deep pile carpet on the floors, a patterned virgin wool headliner and an "oblong aperture in the roof liner" set off by white LEDs.

There are words as flowery as the materials in the press release below and a gallery of high-res images to make sense of it all above. What do you think, should BMW consider a production version of this concept as a successor to the long-dormant 8 Series? Have your say in Comments.

The 2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo

The 2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is being launched to a pretty cynical automotive press brigade. You know it. We know it. Heck, even BMW knows it. We've just returned from driving it on the rather unforgiving and sometimes nasty roads of Sicily, and even before we got behind the wheel, many of our media colleagues were busying themselves doubting the 3 GT's very raison d'être. So, despite the always excellent Sicilian hospitality, the day's atmosphere was kind of fragile.

While the press in attendance seemed determined to nail every product expert to the wall for having been even tangentially associated with the larger 5 Series Gran Turismo, it seemed that BMW decided ahead of time to not introduce such a sensitive discussion topic. That strategy would do little to smooth things over as everyone started digging for dirt on BMW's so far clumsy Gran Turismo franchise.

As it turns out, we like the 3 GT despite so many packaging and design cards being stacked against it just by association with the 5 GT precedent. Automotive journalists are sometimes wrong en masse and this case of prejudice toward the 3 GT is one of those times.

And besides, much in the way the entire Buick brand still exists because China fell in love with it (entirely to General Motors' dumb-luck surprise), the 5 GT has somewhat thrived due to similar circumstances. The odd-duck 5 Series version – arguably the least appealing design ever to roll out of the halls of BMW – has found its savior almost exclusively in the Land of Confucius. After driving this new 3 GT, we have no reason to doubt it will find far more favor not just in China, but in all of BMW's major markets.

First off, the 3 GT is based off the long-wheelbase 3 Series chassis created especially for the Chinese market. We've always liked seeing and riding in these stretched 3 Series and 5 Series sedans when traveling there, as the driving experience in Shanghai and Beijing traffic gets really old after about a half hour. The passenger experience in this 3 GT is thus very swell with its exterior 7.9-inches longer than the 3 Series wagon, and sporting a 4.3-inch longer wheelbase. Height is also increased by 3.2 inches, which immediately allows for fantastic headroom along with a more commanding 2.3-inch higher seat position front and back. Part of the height is also gained by setting the chassis one inch higher than the rest of the 3 Series family.

So, is it really a 3 Series? We had the same logic challenge with the 5 GT dimensionally, since that model is more like a 7 Series in certain aspects. After a while, you sort of let go of the quandary, however, because really it doesn't matter. Can this 3 GT stand on its own? Trying to locate something out there that is similarly sized, we came up with the much less luxurious Dodge Journey (a.k.a. Fiat Fremont in Europe), which is just a couple inches longer to allow its third-row seating. At least for the moment, the 3 GT pretty well stands alone in its niche.

For the US, everything that applies trim and option-wise to the 3 Series sedan will apply to the 3 GT, which launches in September at a starting price of around $38,500 for the 328i GT and $45,500 for the 335i GT. Exact pricing will be announced closer to the time of deliveries, and buyers can expect xDrive all-wheel drive models then as well. Our tester seen here is a 335i GT M Sport rear-driver dipped in the options list – which includes the $3,200 M Sport package – and it arrives at just under $60,000. That's a wad of cash, but BMW has proven that its customers aren't afraid to option 3 Series models up into 5 Series territory. Sadly, there were no 328i testers available, but our hunch is that the 28i trim will be the better everyday choice, just as we've found with the 3 Series sedan.

As with the rest of BMW's 35i models, the engine here is the much loved N55 Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder chugging forth 302 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, accompanied by 295 pound-feet of torque from 1,200 to 5,000 rpm. Even at a stated weight of 3,850 pounds, the 335i GT's 0-60 mile per hour time is estimated at 5.2 seconds when all the right buttons are pushed (i.e. Drive Dynamics suite in Sport+, as well as that same S+ for the eight-speed Sport automatic seen in the Sport and M Sport lines).

There was just enough water left on the pavement from a rain squall – plus a little sand – and no traffic in rural Sicily on our drive. On a bit of a dare, we temporarily unplugged all the dynamic limiters/helpers, set the chassis, steering, gearshifts and throttle in Sport+, and had at it through a few hairpins to see if this more practically proportioned 3 GT can handle like an M Sport should. For a stretched 3 Series that stands taller and weighs 290 pounds more than the equivalent sedan, the 335i GT M Sport acquitted itself commendably well. Its electromechanical steering is not a favorite, but the throttle play and programming of the eight-speed gearbox are both sweet work. So, we can tick the "nicely controlled oversteer" box for the 335i GT. For some time now, BMW has gone whole hog on the run-flat tires, which is a shame. With M Sport specification, you can choose between having summer performance run-flats or all-season run-flats, but neither is ideal. Our tester had the optional 19-inch Continental ContiSportContact SSR treads, and while they look nice on the M Sport wheels, 19-inch run-flats on a hauler of this dimension are simply not right. The adaptive suspension helps smooth out the bumps and bruises, but this run-flat obsession remains dissatisfying. Couple that to the robot-assist steering and a chunk of mid-curve fidelity has been lost. The chassis and powertrain, however, are an extremely sweet duo – almost good enough to make us care less about these less strong points.

M235i Coupe in November 2013

AutoBild has released a render showing a potential look for the rumored BMW 2-Series GranCoupe. We already know the 2-Series Coupe and Convertible are on their way, but most likely BMW has other models in the pipeline for its new 2-Series lineup.

It is believed a four-door GranCoupe version is also in the works, a car which is rumored to have a slightly longer wheelbase and roofline. There are also talks about a 2-Series Gran Sports Tourer as a more attractive alternative to the regular Tourer, developed for those who prefer more luxury instead of utility. BMW has already confirmed a successor for the 1-Series M Coupe which means an M2 Coupe is on its way. Chances are the GranCoupe will also receive the M treatment to tackle the recently introduced Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG.

BMW 6 Gran Coupe by Hamann

Following a quick preview over the summer, Hamann has released details for the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe tuning package which consists of an aerodynamic kit, new wheels, custom interior and a lowering kit. The aero kit brings a restyled front grille, bumper, carbon fiber hood and LED daytime running lights.

At the back it gets a lift-reducing spoiler, a tailgate cover and a redesigned bumper with a built-in diffuser and four-pipe mufflers. The front and rear of the car are tied naturally by the new discreet side skirts. One of the many wheels available are the monoblock

Anniversary Evo Hyper Black measuring 9Jx21-inch at the front with 255/30ZR21 tires, while at the back it gets 11,0Jx21-inch alloys covered by 295/25ZR21 rubbers. Hamann can install a lowering kit that brings the 6-Series Gran Coupe closer to the ground by up to 30mm. For the interior cabin a full upholstery customization program is available, including materials such as Alcantara, leather and wood.

Aluminum pedals and bespoke floor mats are also part of the package.
